Rangers brought the curtain down on the season with a disappointing performance against Kilmarnock as the blew the chance to record their first post-split clean sweep ever.
The Gers were never really at the races despite dominating much of the game and far too many of Steven Gerrard’s squad looked like they were already on the beach.
Just moments later, Kilmarnock did open the scoring through former Rangers winger Chris Burke. Glen Kamara was dispossessed in midfield by Youssuf Mulumbu and the on-loan Celtic midfielder picked out Burke who rolled the ball home.
The Gers dominated the ball in the opening spell of the game but couldn’t really test the Killie keeper much afterwards as the first half fizzed by.
Despite having so much possession, Rangers never really looked like scoring in the first 45 and it can’t have pleased Gerrard for so many of his players to have been off the boil.
There was a real penalty shout for the Gers when Burke stopped a cross with his arm but Willie Collum decided it was accidental and waved the claims away.
With half an hour left, there was a chance for one of the young Academy stars to make a name for himself as Gerrard handed Dapo Mebude his first-team debut when he replaced Daniel Candeias.
Rangers finally got themselves level with 24 minutes left after a sensational finish by Morelos to net his 30th goal of the season.
Kilmarnock thought they had a winner when Liam Millar rolled the ball home but the linesman had his flag up to save Rangers’ blushes.
There was another debutant for Rangers in the late stages as Andy Firth had to replace Wes Foderingham after the keeper was hurt clearing a corner.
Willie Collum made himself the centre of attention right at the death by awarding a ridiculously soft penalty against Borna Barisic which was fired home by Brophy.
Wes Foderingham – 6
Continued in the side as Allan McGregor serves his suspension. Barely involved for long spells as the game played out in midfield. Done well when called upon. Went off injured late on.
Jon Flanagan – 6
Started at right-back in the absence of James Tavernier. Booked for a late tackle on Taylor.
Connor Goldson – 7
Captain for the day in the absence of James Tavernier. Rarely troubled and done well when Kilmarnock did get forward.
Joe Worrall – 6
Back in the side with Niko Katic given some time off ahead of the U21 Euros. Final game for Rangers and nothing spectacular from the Nottingham Forest man.
Borna Barisic – 5
Passenger for long spells in the game. Goes from looking every inch the quality player to looking like someone totally out of his depth with frightening regularity. Wouldn’t be a surprise if it turns out to be his last game for Rangers. Victim of a poor refereeing decision that cost Rangers the game.
Glen Kamara – 6
A rare mistake in possession led to Kilmarnock opening the scoring. Looked a little out of sorts but done well enough. Going to be a massive player next season for Gerrard’s side.
Andy Halliday – 6
A better left-back than he is a midfielder. Didn’t offer enough penetration going forward although he moved the ball around well enough as Rangers dominated possession. Replaced by Defoe.
Ryan Jack – 6
Typical Ryan Jack performance as he swept everything up in midfield with consummate ease. Needs to offer a bit more going forward at times.
Ryan Kent – 7
Rangers most creative player and caused a number of problems for the Kilmarnock defence with his pace and trickery. If this is to be his final Rangers appearance then he won’t have too many complaints.
Daniel Candeias – 5
Struggled to have any impact in the first half beyond his shot in the opening ten minutes. Replaced by Dapo Mebude in the second half.
Alfredo Morelos – 7
Didn’t have anywhere near enough influence in the game for long spells and looked to take a sore one from Jamie MacDonald in the second half. Grabbed his 30th goal of the season with a fantastic finish which left the Killie keeper helpless.
