Former Rangers star Kris Boyd believes the Light Blues need a decision over Allan McGregor’s future soon as he hinted the Gers will need to go into the market for a new keeper if the veteran does decide to move on.
McGregor is out of contract and was widely expected to retire this summer but it remains unclear what the 40-year-old’s future plans are.
While Boyd confessed that McGregor may well fancy another season and thinks the club should ‘respect’ the time he’s taken to decide what he wants to do given his service to Rangers over the years.
“Jon McLaughlin has shown that he can step in,” Boyd said [Sky Sports].
“Whether he’s ready to go and play a full season for Rangers is a different story and remains to be seen if he’s given the opportunity.
“I would imagine if Allan McGregor doesn’t sign a new contract, then Rangers will bring in another goalkeeper. The question is are you bringing in a goalkeeper that’s going to be second choice to Jon McLaughlin or someone that’s going to be first choice? That’s the decision Rangers will have to make.
“On Allan McGregor, I don’t know. I said a few months ago this would probably be his last season. But the way the season finished for him, he probably wants more of it.
“It remains to be seen what will happen with Allan and it’s a difficult one. When you come to the end of your career, you might only play a handful of games and all of a sudden, you maybe feel your time is up.
“But Allan played the majority of the games last season and it’s very difficult to walk away from playing 40-odd games a season. The fitness levels are there and he’s shown he can do it. He played in the Europa League final, he won the Scottish Cup and pushed Celtic all the way in the league so he’s had a big part in the season.
“Only Allan will decide and from a Rangers point of view, you’ve got to respect that as well because he’s done a lot for the football club, but I can understand that Rangers will want to know exactly what’s happening soon.”
Rangers can’t wait forever on McGregor deciding what he wants to do
While Boyd thinks Rangers should let McGregor make his mind up, the Gers can’t wait forever on the veteran.
If he doesn’t want to play on, Rangers need to bring someone in and the keeper needs to realise that the club will keep going regardless of what he decides.
As the players get set to return for pre-season, if McGregor hasn’t decided by then, the club should make his decision for him.
