Rangers icon Barry Ferguson was impressed with Ibrox left-back Calvin Bassey again after he was handed a start in the Europa League playoff against Alashkert on Thursday night – and believes the former Leicester City kid has shown he’s ready to push Borna Barisic to become the first-choice for Steven Gerrard’s side.
Bassey was given the nod ahead of Barisic on Thursday night, having also started the 5-0 rout of Dunfermline last week in the League Cup and Fergie thinks dismissals of his performance against the Pars were shown up when he continued his fine form against the Armenians.
After a year to settle at Rangers following his move north, Bassey has caught the eye so far and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him start again tomorrow against Ross County, with Ferguson thinking that’s something that will have helped Bassey push on.
“People said last week after his showing against Dunfermline that he was only facing a Championship side, but that wasn’t fair and there were more impressive signs against the Armenians,” Ferguson said [Daily Record].
“He’s looking strong, his delivery into the box was good as he’ll have had a strong grounding at a place like Leicester.
“Bassey has had time to settle into his surroundings and he’s ready to push Borna Barisic on this evidence.”
With massive games against Alashkert and Celtic coming up rapidly, Rangers can’t afford to gamble on bringing back an out of form Barisic so he could get his chance to show he’s back to his best tomorrow in Dingwall, but after strong performances from Bassey it would be unfair on him to lose his spot.
One thing is certain though, Bassey needs more games this season to continue developing into a bonafide first-team player so Barisic may find himself having to be patient at times this season.
Meanwhile, Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has been explaining why one of the club’s attacking players has been dropped from a major Ibrox squad.
