Rangers loanees help Ayr United stun Ross County

Rangers duo Stephen Kelly and Jordan Houston helped cause the “upset of the day” in the Scottish Cup as they secured progression to the last 16 with loan club Ayr United, at the expense of Scottish Premiership Ross County.

The Ibrox pair were both named in Mark Kerr’s starting XI for the Somerset Park clash as the Honest Men picked up a 1-0 win over their top-flight opponents.

It was Kelly’s corner that set up the game’s only goal as nobody tracked Ayr skipper Steven Bell’s run and he headed home from the on-loan Rangers starlet’s delivery.

United will now join Rangers in tonight’s last 16 draw and could come out the hat against Steven Gerrard’s side.

If that happens, Kelly and Houston would be forced to sit out and watch from the sidelines.

Both have been regulars in the starting XI at Somerset Park this season and are making the most of their loan spells as they look to catch Gerrard’s eye.

Helping the Honest Men reach the last 16 will certainly go some way to doing that and if they can propel the Championship side further in the competition, it will definitely garner some attention at Ibrox.
