Rangers have lost 3-1 to Bayer Leverkusen at Ibrox to leave the Gers’ Europa League dreams hanging by a thread.

The defeat was Rangers’ first at Ibrox in Europe since 2011 as a 17-game unbeaten run at home comes to an end in UEFA competition.

The Gers fell behind to a penalty in the first half as VAR was used for the first time to penalise George Edmundson for a handball inside the box.

Peter Bosz’s side then doubled their advantage before Edmundson pulled one back to give the Rangers fans hope of another famous European comeback.

It wasn’t to be though as the Germans grabbed a late third goal to kill of the fightback and leave the Light Blues needing a massive turnaround in Leverkusen – if the second leg takes place.

Here’s how Steven Gerrard’s side rated against Leverkusen:

Subscribe

Allan McGregor – 6

Well beaten at the second goal and was a virtual spectator for long spells as both sides battled in midfield.

James Tavernier – 6

Back in the side after injury and put in a massive amount of work down the right for Steven Gerrard’s side. Clearance allowed Leverkusen to score their second but a decent performance from Tav otherwise.

Connor Goldson – 6

Much more assured performance from the defender as he looked comfortable at the back. Made several crucial interceptions as Leverkusen looked to double their advantage.

George Edmundson – 7

Hadn’t put a foot wrong before giving slipping then giving away a penalty seconds later. Made up for it with his goal to set up a frantic final 15 minutes.

Borna Barisic – 7

Typical Borna Barisic performance and always offered an outlet down the left as Rangers tried to get themselves back into the game.

Steven Davis – 4

Really sloppy in possession in spells as he continually made slack passes or turned into trouble. The Ulsterman’s form is baffling at times and, were others available, you question whether he’d have been in the side.

Glen Kamara – 6

Asked to do lots of pressing and stuck to his task admirably. Picked up a booking that rules him out of the second leg. Helped protect the defence as Leverkusen enjoyed plenty of possession. Replaced by Hagi after going 2-0 down.

Scott Arfield – 6

Popped up everywhere as he covered every blade of grass. Like Kamara, had to do a huge amount of pressing as Rangers tried to nullify the Leverkusen attack.

Joe Aribo – 5

The Nigerian started in a more advanced role but little seemed to work for him and his passes went astray too often. Limped off shortly after the break as Kamberi came off the bench. Needs to be braver on the ball.

Ryan Kent – 6

Tried to make things happen but didn’t get a huge amount of joy from the Leverkusen defence. Only really started to influence the game after being moved to the right.

Alfredo Morelos – 5

Not involved anywhere enough for long spells of the game but did have a couple of good chances.  Needs to do more or Gerrard will need to take him out the side.

Substitutes: Flo Kamberi (6) Replaced Aribo shortly after the break and injected new life into the Gers. Ianis Hagi (5) On for Kamara with just over 20 minutes to go. Matt Polster (3) On for the final few minutes.
