Rangers legend warns Steven Gerrard off of Newcastle United job

Rangers legend Graeme Souness has warned current manager Steven Gerrard off taking the Newcastle United job.

The Ibrox gaffer has been extensively linked to the job on Tyneside after a billionaire Saudi-led buyout which leaves the Magpies amongst the richest clubs in football.

Gerrard is said to be amongst three names on a Newcastle shortlist for the job [Times] but Souness believes the Ibrox gaffer should steer clear of the role.

RONALDO NEEDS TO STOP WHINING.

“I don’t think it’s one he should go near,” said Souness [Clyde].

“My advice to him would be to stay where he is.

“Although he has been in the Rangers job for three years, he’ll realise that’s a short time in management.

“He’s still learning after three years – but he’ll still be learning after 23 years.

“I think he should wait, and he will wait, for the Liverpool job. It’s inevitable he’ll get offered it.

“I don’t see Jurgen (Klopp) being there beyond the next two or three years. If Steven ends up being Rangers manager for five or six years, that’s a great education for him.

“I don’t think there’s any lure at Newcastle – and when you look at the human rights aspect, I would find it hard to go and work for that club again with the new owners.

“I wouldn’t do it. I just would not do it.”

Graeme Souness managed Rangers for five years between 1986 and 1991 and he knows all taking the step away from the club.

The former Ibrox manager is Liverpool legend just like Gerrard and he left the club for Anfield after five years in Glasgow.

Whilst Gerrard has been extensively linked to the job, one of the Ibrox gaffer’s international teammates is the latest name to be linked to the role.
