Rangers legend Derek Johnstone has named two Ibrox stars he’d have liked to have played with – picking out wingers Ryan Kent and Daniel Candeias from the current crop of Gers stars.
DJ thinks their ability to get to the by line and fire crosses into the box would’ve made them a good fit for his own style – but admits there’s nobody else who would get near to the classic Gers teams he played in during the 70’s.
“I think Kent. I just think from the way he gets down there and gets balls into the box. Candeias as well,” DJ told
“I was used to playing with people like Tommy McLean, Davie Cooper, Willie Johnston… people that got to that by line and fizzed the ball into the box, and that’s where I scored my goals.
“I think these two could do it as well. They’re probably the only two that I would look at.
“That’s no disrespect for the team, but we had a far better side certainly in the 70’s. But I’d love to try and get on to the end of a couple of their balls into the box.”
Of all the players in Gerrard’s squad, it is surprising that the two he’s picked out are Candeias and Kent.
It would’ve been really interesting to have seen DJ paired with Alfredo Morelos or getting on the end of some of James Tavernier’s crosses.
Sadly though, it’s never something we’ll get to see – although hopefully some of the current squad at Ibrox can go on and write their name into the club’s history just like Johnstone.
