Rangers handed Roberto Martinez Aston Villa boost amid Gerrard links

Rangers fans worried about the potential of Steven Gerrard leaving Ibrox for Aston Villa may take some solace in the news Roberto Martinez reportedly wants the job.

Ibrox boss Gerrard, 41, is reportedly Villa’s primary target for the role at Villa Park [Daily Mail] with Belgium boss Martinez running the Ibrox gaffer a close second.

Other names like Brentford’s Thomas Frank, Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand and fellow England legend Frank Lampard have also been linked.

RONALDO NEEDS TO STOP WHINING.

But it’s Steven Gerrard and Roberto Martinez who’ve been most heavily linked with the job at Aston Villa and whilst there’s things are tight-lipped at Ibrox, the sounds are Martinez wants the role.

The Sun are reporting that the Belgium manager, 48, is unhappy with the set up in the Belgian national camp and wants the job at Aston Villa.

That report claims that Martinez wants to return to club management – despite the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup being on the horizon – and believes he’s taken the nation as far as he can.

The suggestion that Martinez would turn down one last chance at World Cup glory with the greatest ever Belgian team – and the FIFA World Rankings’ number one nation – is certainly a bold one.

But the English newspaper has made it and we’re certainly going to see how things play out in the next couple of weeks.

This is a story that is going to rumble on until it is settled one way or another but should Roberto Martinez be genuinely interested it will come as a boost to Rangers fans.

The report also claims that the ex-Swansea, Wigan Athletic, and Everton manager turned down the chance to manage Villa in 2011.

Martinez is also a former player and even turned out in Scotland for a season, the former defensive midfielder spending the 2001/02 season at Motherwell.

Whilst the papers are very much reporting Villa want Gerrard in at Ibrox, many of the Birmingham club’s supporters aren’t exactly convinced.
