Rangers face Joe Aribo selection dilemma ahead of Legia Warsaw clash

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard faces a selection dilemma ahead of tonight’s crunch Europa League tie against Legia Warsaw with Joe Aribo walking a suspension tightrope.

The midfielder has already picked up two yellow cards so far in the qualifying campaign and a third tonight would rule him out of the return leg at Ibrox in seven days.

However, if Aribo was to pick up a yellow card in the second leg, there would be no suspension as all bookings and “pending yellow-card suspensions” get wiped ahead of the group stages, according to Article 49.03 of the Europa League regulations.

The midfielder has made a really impressive start to life at Ibrox since his move from Charlton over the summer, winning a call-up to the Nigerian international squad in the process, and would likely play a key role for Gerrard’s side over the coming games.

With a number of alternative options available such as Andy King, Glen Kamara or Scott Arfield to play alongside Ryan Jack and Steven Davis in central midfield, Gerrard isn’t forced into playing Aribo tonight.

Progress to the next round is likely to hinge on what happens at Ibrox next week and ensuring Aribo is available for that game should, arguably, be Gerrard’s priority.

Throwing King in might be seen as a bit of a gamble after a lack of game-time recently and having only just recently joined the squad, but the hugely-experienced Welshman should be more than capable of coming into the starting XI and doing a job tonight.

Kamara playing 90 minutes against both FC Midtjylland and East Fife over the last week means he’s unlikely to start tonight however moving Scott Arfield back into the centre of midfield rather than the more advanced role he’s played recently would definitely be an option; allowing Gerrard to play the likes of both Sheyi Ojo and Jordan Jones from the start.

Aribo might well end up starting, but it would be a surprise if it is a decision Gerrard hasn’t spent plenty of time considering as he looks to secure Rangers’ place in the Europa League group stages for the second successive season.
