Rangers fans relieved as Filip Helander pictured back in training

Rangers fans have expressed their relief on social media after Filip Helander was pictured back in training on Friday [Rangers FC Twitter] after a long injury absence.

Steven Gerrard confirmed earlier in the day that the Sweden international had rejoined the group after three months out of action.

Helander sustained a foot injury in the closing stages of the League Cup final against Celtic in December and has missed a large number of games as a result.

The £3 million defender has been forced to watch on as the Gers crumbled domestically, with various combinations of Connor Goldson, Nikola Katic and George Edmundson struggling against clubs whose threat was easily nullified over the first half of the campaign.

The hope for many Bears will be that, although it’s too late in terms of the pursuit of silverware, Helander will soon return to shore up the back four for the final months of the season.

The 26-year-old made 17 appearances prior to his injury, helping to keep ten clean sheets and scoring twice.

He isn’t the quickest centre-back around, but he showed plenty of nouse and good decision-making, particularly during the Europa League group stage campaign.

Gerrard will be delighted to get the ex-Bologna man back and it seems the fans are too.

Here’s a selection of reactions from Twitter:
