Rangers return to Europa League action tonight when they face Bayer Leverkusen at Ibrox – and Gers fans are not impressed at Ianis Hagi only making the bench.

The Gers have made two changes to the side which beat Ross County 1-0 on Sunday as James Tavernier and Scott Arfield return to the side  at the expense of Matt Polster and Hagi.

There were fears earlier today that the game could be postponed after it was reported that UEFA are set to announce the suspension of competitions due to coronavirus – however the game is going ahead and Gers fans are looking forward to seeing their side.

Leverkusen started the season in the Champions League but defeats in their opening three matches – 1-2 at home to Lokomotiv Moskva, 0-3 at Juventus and 0-1 at Atlético Madrid – left them struggling to make it through to the knockout phase and although they rallied to beat Lokomotiv away and Atlético at home, a home defeat by Juve in the final game  left them in third place and dropping into the Europa League.

The two sides have met before – the only of the pairings in the last 16 to have met in UEFA competition – facing off in the 1998/99 UEFA Cup second round, with Rangers winning 3-2 on aggregate and Finnish striker Jonatan Johansson scoring in both legs.

A win over Rangers’ group stage rivals Porto last month put Leverkusen into the last 16 for the third time, but they have never made it beyond this stage, going out in both previous ties to Spanish side Villarreal.

Fans are not happy with Hagi’s exclusion though and were left scratching their heads trying to figure out why he wasn’t starting.
