Rangers fans have reacted with despair on social media after the Gers were dumped out of the Scottish Cup at the quarter-final stage following a 1-0 defeat to Hearts.

It was another wretched domestic performance from Steven Gerrard’s side and a stunning fall from grace following the Europa League win over Braga in midweek.

Things looked a little ominous from the moment the teams were announced, with Alfredo Morelos absent due to a breach of discipline.

With no Morelos and no Florian Kamberi, who was cup-tied, the Gers lacked a focal point and barely created an opportunity across the 90 minutes.

It was 0-0 at half-time following a turgid first half, but Hearts exerted plenty of pressure early in the second period and got their reward in the 58th minute.

Mistakes from both James Tavernier and Allan McGregor afforded Lewis Moore an opportunity to cut the ball back for Oliver Bozanic, who dispatched a finish.

In truth, the Gers created next to nothing thereafter, despite it being clear that the season was in the balance.

George Edmundson headed over twice from a corner, but Hearts, the side currently bottom of the Premiership table, marshalled the closing stages comfortably and booked a spot in a Hampden Park semi-final.

There was a mixture of anger and disbelief from Bears on social media in the immediate aftermath, as it now looks set to be another trophyless season for the club.
