Stewart Downing confirms Rangers talks over potential summer transfer

Former England international Stewart Downing has confirmed that he held talks over a possible move to Rangers this summer but the prospect of not playing regularly led him to opt for a move to Blackburn Rovers instead.
The 35-year-old left Middlesbrough over the summer and admits that he didn’t know if he’d play enough at Ibrox after Gerrard admitted he had other moves “in the pipeline.”

Downing instead joined former Celtic boss Tony Mowbray at Ewood Park –
and it’s a move few Rangers fans will have had any problem with.
“That was another option. I know Steven so I spoke to him but he had a few players already in the pipeline and I need to play games,” Downing told Teeside Live.
“He already had a big squad at Rangers – would I have played as many games as I would have liked to? I don’t know.

“At Blackburn I will be involved a lot more and that was the main decision to go there.”

It’s hard to see where the veteran would have fitted into the Rangers side and the Gers have dodged a bullet with Downing’s decision to move to Blackburn instead.
While there’s no doubt he’d bring a wealth of experience, it’s hard to argue that he’s in a similar position to the likes of Steven Davis and Jermain Defoe who, despite their advancing years, are still playing some of the best football of their careers.
The signings of players like Jordan Jones and Sheyi Ojo suggest that the Gers were looking for far more energetic, direct wingers than Downing and, thankfully, it never got beyond having talks.
