Rangers defender Helander targets more goals after Motherwell winner

The Gers made hard work of Sunday afternoon’s outing against a well-organised Motherwell side.

The visitors took the lead and after James Tavernier missed a penalty in the 38th minute, it looked like being one of those days.

Jermain Defoe got the Light Blues back on level terms though before Helander came up with the telling contribution in the 80th minute.

Getting on the end of an excellent Tavernier ball, his header and first official goal for the club, secured all three points.

“It was a great corner from Tav and there was a lot of traffic in the box but I got my head to it,” said Helander, as quoted by “I was on the ground and had a guy over me so I just saw the ball go into the back of the net and it was a fantastic feeling. I never got to celebrate it properly but I didn’t know how to anyway!”

“We create a lot of corners and free-kicks so there are good opportunities to score a lot of goals. Hopefully, I get to score a few more.”

The goal capped a fantastic week for Helander, who excelled at centre-back during the 1-1 draw with Porto in the Europa League.

The header made him even more popular with the fans who’ll be excited to hear that the Sweden international is targeting more big contributions down the line.

Stevie G has four big central defenders to choose from at the minute, and we know for sure that three of them pose a considerable threat from set-pieces.

Connor Goldson, Nikola Katic and Helander now have six goals between them this season, and their ability to chip in means that on the days where it isn’t quite working out for the front men, three points are still possible.
