Rangers Colts' 'missing' XI shows how strong Gers Academy is

Rangers Colts have come in for a massive amount of praise in recent weeks as they impress in the UEFA Youth League and Challenge Cup – but Graeme Murty’s side could be even stronger with an entire starting XI currently unavailable to the Gers.

Much of the side that started the game against the National League side are already looking like they have a good chance of making the grade at Ibrox but had Murty had everyone available, there aren’t many who would have started against the Red Dragons.

That’s no slight on the players who did do so well against Wrexham, but instead, a sign of the fantastic talent coming through that Academy under Murty, Craig Mulholland and the other youth staff.

Berwick Rangers, Stranraer, Ballymena United, Solihull Moors and Wrexham have all been beaten in the Challenge Cup this season and Murty’s side could even emulate Mark Warburton’s 2016 side and go on and lift the trophy.

With players at just about every level in Scotland on loan, and a handful south of the border too, Murty really had an embarrassment of talent at his disposal.

Excluding the overage players who started against Wrexham, Jon Flanagan and George Edmundson, only Jamie Barjonas, Lewis Mayo and Nathan Patterson would have been absolute nailed on starters if everyone was available and it can only bode well for the future at Ibrox.

Whether those out on loan go on to have first-team careers at Ibrox remains to be seen but it would be hard to argue against the selection of almost any of them were they available on Saturday.

The likes of Glenn Middleton and Josh McPake would have been absolute certainties to start at Ibrox, as would Zak Rudden and Stephen Kelly.

Throw in the likes of Cammy Palmer and Jordan Houston and it’s easy to see just how spoilt for choice Murty would have been – then there’s Dapo Mebude and Danny Finlayson who are both still at the club but weren’t available at the weekend.

With such a list of talented young players unavailable, we’ve compiled a starting XI of Academy players who missed the win over Wrexham and wouldn’t have counted as an overage player (20 or under on December 31st 2019):

GK: Aidan McAdams (On loan at Edinburgh City)

RB: Jordan Houston (On loan at Ayr United)

CB: Aidan Wilson (On loan at Edinburgh City)

CB: Danny Finlayson (Unavailable)

LB: Matty Shiels (On loan at Dumbarton)

CM: Stephen Kelly (On loan at Ayr United)

CM: Cammy Palmer (On loan at Partick Thistle)

LW: Josh McPake (On loan at Dundee

CAM: Glenn Middleton (On loan at Hibs)

RW: Jake Hastie (On loan at Rotherham United)

CF: Zak Rudden (On loan at Plymouth Argyle)
