RangersChampions League rivals Napoli have drawn Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt as the Italians earn the chance to soothe some Ibrox pain.

Napoli finished Group A winners with Liverpool runners up and Ajax in the Europa League spot, whilst Eintracht Frankfurt were runners up in tight Group D, finishing behind Tottenham Hotspur and above Sporting and Marseille.

Now, the two teams have drawn each other in the Champions League Last 16 with Napoli set to welcome Eintracht Frankfurt to the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium next year.

Group A runners up Liverpool have drawn a Champions League tie with Real Madrid in a repeat of last season’s Final in Paris.

Napoli draw Frankfurt as Rangers lick Champions League wounds

Not only did the Gers have to suffer the ignominy of a penalty kicks defeat to the Germans in Seville, but by losing out on the trophy the club also missed out on automatic Champions League qualification and a spot in pot 1.

Instead, Rangers were hauled out of Pot 4 into something of a group of death as they faced off against Napoli, Liverpool and Ajax.

The resultant campaign was a disaster, with Rangers plagued by injuries and winding up as the competition’s worst ever performing team, getting 0 points, scoring 2 goals and conceding 22.

The entire thing has heaped huge pressure on Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst and the Ibrox boss is now staring down the barrel of a gun.

After slipping out of Europe with a whimper the club are now seven points behind in the Scottish Premiership title race and there are now serious doubts about his future.

Perhaps Napoli can exert a semblance of revenge on Eintracht Frankfurt, with the Italians one of Europe’s top performing sides at this moment.

Meanwhile, Rangers fans have been discussing the possibility of one South American coach joining the club should Gio be sacked.
