Old Firm in EL last 16 would be 'massive' insists Kris Boyd

Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd believes that both the Gers and their bitter rivals Celtic will “fancy their chances” at reaching the last 16 of the Europa League – and thinks it would be an “unbelievable achievement” for the Scottish game.

Rangers face SC Braga while Celtic take on FC Copenhagen in the last 32 and Boyd admits that the coefficient boost would be “massive” for Scottish football.

If the Old Firm can make it through, there’s the prospect of meeting in the last 16, potentially setting up three Old Firm games in the space of a week, and Boyd thinks that will “worry” both sides.

“I think both will worry about that if they can get through,” Boyd said, as quoted by Sky Sports.

“But both Rangers and Celtic will fancy their chances that they can get through and to potentially have two sides in the last 16 would be an unbelievable achievement for Scottish football.

“For the coefficient, and what it could mean for having two teams in the Champions League, it would be massive for our game. While Rangers were down the leagues other teams did not have the finances to compete in Europe but now Rangers and Celtic can.”

Both sides have a great chance of making it through and reaching the last 32 would almost certainly guarantee a second place in the Champions League from 2021 onwards.

An Old Firm meeting in Europe would through up a really unique scenario as the Glasgow giants go head-to-head in UEFA competition for the first time ever.

Getting through the last 32 though is critical and lots can change between now and when the Europa League resumes at the end of February.
