Rangers needed a whole, new attack to be bought this summer with one player in particular looking like a lot will be resting on his broad shoulders – Cyriel Dessers.

As our most experienced new recruit up front, he is a natural number nine, capable of playing to suit the occasion and the opponent.

Speaking after the Champions League draw with PSV Eindhoven, the Rangers manager was quick to point out that Cyriel Dessers isn’t far away from being the player he hoped he was signing, via the Rangers YouTube channel.

The 28-year old might not be lightning quick, but there is no doubting his work rate.

The last two games have seen goals come from him leading the press and turning over possession to set up teammates.

Rangers beginning to see the best of Cyriel Dessers

In six games so far, the Belgian-born Nigeria international has two goals and three assists and is unlucky not to have a couple more goals to his name but for outstanding goalkeeping.

Against PSV, he was selfless and, despite not having any chances himself, created the two goals and sent Abdallah Sima clean through for Rangers too.

No wonder Michael Beale was impressed:

“I thought the front three worked really hard. Cyriel Dessers, that’s his best performance for Rangers so far.

“You can see he’s up to speed.

“He took the centre-backs on physically and he’s won that battle because he’s got two assists.”

What he needs now is for his teammates to start giving him the same sort of opportunities and will be fully up and running.

Michael Beale also has to find the right system domestically to get Danilo and Dessers on the park together at the same time.

They linked up well against Morton but there must be a way of getting them playing together successfully.

Now that Rangers seaspn is well underway, Cyriel Dessers will be expected to continue to produce the goods and put to bed, once and for all, any doubts that he can lead the line.
