Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has praised Greg Stewart, following Saturday’s hammering of Aberdeen, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.
Stewart was handed his first league start for the Gers, and had an absolute stormer. He scored just before half-time, hit the post after the interval and won his side’s second penalty of the game.
The 29-year-old had a double point to prove, given that it was his first real opportunity in a big game in the Light Blue jersey, but also because it was against his old side. Stewart had two loan spells at Pittodrie with the most recent a disappointing stint during the second half of last season.

“It’s important that people know it had nothing to do with sentiment why Greg started,” said Gerrard, as quoted by the Scottish Sun. “His training performances have been outstanding, the quality that he’s shown.”
“I think he’s fitter now, he’s in better shape. He knows how we play now in and out of possession. He knows what is asked of him and the demands.

Verdict
We had a suspicion that Stewart would be given an opportunity against the Dons, but no one expected him to make quite such a big impact.
Buoyed by his goal, he was everywhere in the second half and went close to adding to his personal tally on a number of occasions.
He certainly put his best foot forward and it’ll be interesting to see whether or not he continues in the side against Young Boys on Thursday. Gerrard’s words certainly suggest it’s a possibility.
Bears were mightily impressed by the lifelong bluenoses’ display, and if he continues in this vein, he could quickly become an Ibrox cult hero.
