Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has joked that he “nearly passed out” when Jermain Defoe set up Scott Arfield’s third goal in the win over Motherwell – saying that it’s not the Defoe he knows.
The veteran striker rolled the ball into Arfield’s path for the first hat-trick of his career and Gerrard admitted it shows the respect between the two stars.
“I nearly passed out in the stand – that’s not the Jermain Defoe I know!” Gerrard told RangersTV.
But I think he has respected his teammate by giving him his hat-trick, and I’m sure Scotty would have done the same thing if the shoe was on the other foot.
“So that was excellent and it’s Scotty Arfield’s day, but I am sure he would recognise it was a fantastic team performance that helped him get his hat-trick.”
Despite not getting on the scoresheet himself, Defoe put in an impressive shift against the Steelmen.
The veteran looks to be making the most of his opportunity in the side and looks hungry and sharp.
Hopefully Gerrard can keep him in top condition over the coming months as he looks to help the Gers finally end the long wait for a major trophy.
