Rangers absence explained amid £7m Champions League boost

Rangers have been boosted by the news that Ryan Kent will be back in the squad against USG – but comments about Fashion Sakala also solve a mystery surrounding the forward’s absence v Kilmarnock.

Such is Kent’s value to the Rangers side it comes as very positive news ahead of the second leg of the Champions League clash as the Gers look to overturn a 2-0 deficit.

If the £7m winger is fit enough we expect him to start, with Kent absent since the 2-1 win over Livingston and everyone hoping Ryan can have a major impact on the USG match.

Zambian international Fashion Sakala was also left out of the squad for the 2-0 win over Kilmarnock but without any clarification it spawned much discussion regarding the forward’s future.

Fashion Sakala absence clarified as Ryan Kent prepares Rangers return

There have been plenty of exit links surrounding Fashion Sakala this summer, with Ligue 1 Auxerre and La Liga pair Real Sociedad and Celta Vigo mentioned.

Fashion himself has even responded to the claims, suggesting that he is not prepared to go on loan and pointing to the 12 goals he scored last season despite largely being a squad player.

The attacker even suggested in quotes which appeared in the Daily Record that he will sit down and discuss his future with Giovanni van Bronckhorst in the coming weeks.

There’s a feeling that the ex-KV Oostende striker isn’t so much fancied by Giovanni van Bronckhorst but alongside Ryan Kent, the Dutch coach confirmed Sakala would be returning against USG.

“Ryan Kent is in the squad, as is Fashion Jnr. Ryan, we will assess tomorrow and see his fitness level if he can get minutes,” said van Bronckhorst [Rangers].

“It is very positive for me that he was on the pitch today. We still have 24 hours. He is a player who, if he is fit to play, I will have a lot of thinking in my mind.

“He is a player who can be the difference. He is in the squad and for me it is a sign that if he is fit we want to use him as well.

“(Alfredo) Morelos is progressing well after getting minutes at the weekend.”

This, at the very least, confirms that Fashion Sakala wasn’t dropped by van Bronckhorst even if the Dutchman continues to play the likes of Scott Wright in front of him.

But whilst the quotes solve the mystery of Fashion Sakala’s latest absence, they certainly don’t settle his future ahead of the final few weeks of the transfer window.

Here’s our predicted Rangers XI for the must-win Champions League clash with USG.
