Former Rangers star Kris Boyd admits it is “very unlikely” that the Light Blues will be able to keep hold of Joe Aribo, Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos this summer as all three enter the final year of their Ibrox contracts.
The Gers could lose the key trio for free in 12 months’ time and Boyd believes that Gio van Bronckhorst and the Ibrox hierarchy could decide to cash in this summer in a bid to keep others at the club.
Boyd, now a Sky Sports pundit, admits the Gers won’t be able to offer what the likes of Leeds can if they move for Kent as a free agent and confessed it will be “very difficult” for Rangers to offer the sort of money it would take to keep everyone at Ibrox.
“The reality is Rangers have got a number of players going out of contract and it’s very unlikely they’ll be able to keep every single one of them,” Boyd explained [Sky Sports].
“You’d imagine Rangers wouldn’t be able to offer anywhere near what Leeds can offer Ryan Kent if he was to go there on a free transfer.
“Rangers might have to do a few sales this summer so that players don’t leave for nothing next season.
“They won’t be able to keep everybody, I’m sure they would love to but because the players have done so well over a period of years it’s going to be very difficult to offer them the big money it would take to stay.”
Rangers may have to sell – but they can’t undervalue stars in transfer market
While it looks like Rangers may have to sell one or more of the three players, the Light Blues can’t let themselves make the mistake of undervaluing them.
Morelos scoring the goals that take Rangers into the Champions League groups will be worth far more than punting him at £6million to the first bidder.
Ideally, Morelos will sign a new deal at Ibrox and the others will follow suit but, if that doesn’t happen, prioritising getting the maximum value for any player sold is crucial.
