All the talk heading into Rangers’ clash with Dortmund has been around Giovanni van Bronckhorst and namesake and Godson Giovanni Reyna, son of ex-Ibrox star turned FC Austin director Claudio.

GVB and Claudio Reyna met during their playing days at Ibrox and since then have gone on to strike up a wonderful friendship, with Dortmund midfielder Reyna named after the Gers boss.

But as the story makes headlines across the globe, dad Claudio Reyna has also been touting a potential link-up between Rangers and MLS side Austin FC.

Ex-Gers star Claudio is currently the sporting director at the USA side and spoke about his ambitions for a friendly clash in the years to come.

Claudio Reyna also spoke about how Gio’s name came to be as he praised the close bond between his family’s and the Rangers boss’.

“We just liked the name Giovanni for our son,” said Claudio Reyna [BBC Sport].

“When there’s someone that you know who has the name that you have a good friendship with and respect, then it makes it all the better.

“Big Gio’s known little Gio forever, since he was born. It’s going to be a little bit strange for him to see Gio now in person and against him.

“I’m excited for him in getting the opportunity to coach such a great club like Rangers. He deserves it and he’s been waiting for an opportunity like this.

Reyna added: “Hopefully one day Rangers can come here and play in a friendly and see how the sport is growing.”

A USA footballing legend, 112-times capped former international Claudio Reyna played at Rangers between 1999 and 2001, winning the Scottish Premier League and the Scottish Cup.

Ahead of the game, son Gio has also been teaming up with an American Ranger to promote the match stateside.
