James Tavernier addresses Rangers family amid trying times

Rangers captain, James Tavernier, has sent a rallying message to the extended Gers family amid these testing and unprecedented times [Rangers FC Twitter].

The UK is now essentially in a state of lockdown for a period of at least three weeks following Boris Johnson’s address on Monday evening, with individuals only permitted to leave their homes for essential work, shopping or exercise.

It’s a trying time for the population and following a plea from a Scottish Government official for clubs to reach out to their fanbases [Scottish FA Twitter], Rangers stepped up to the plate on Tuesday evening.

Shortly afterwards, the club shared a message from the skipper:

“I want to send my love and support to the Rangers family and the footballing families across the world during this difficult time,” Tavernier began. “I want to say thank you to the health workers, the doctors, the nurses, and everyone that’s involved – they’re showing incredible courage and bravery in the face of this immense challenge.”

“I want everyone to stay safe, I want people to listen to the guidelines. Wash your hands, self-isolate, don’t take any risks.

“I’m really excited to get back playing football, but this situation is more important than anything. So, I want people to look after their loved ones, their friends, their family and stay safe.”

It’s good to see Tavernier, in his capacity as captain, speaking out amid what is a tough time not just for Rangers fans, but the entire population.

He certainly splits opinion amongst supporters, but he’s put across an important message here.

There’s no football as a distraction right now, but a total ban of public gatherings for the foreseeable future should have a major positive impact upon public health in the long run.
