Rangers new head of communications David Graham has been backed by a leading Irish nationalist politician after being appointed by the Ibrox club.

The appointment of former DUP councillor and Orange Order member Graham turned heads in Scotland with many criticising the move as a backwards step for Rangers.

But Dublin-born Fine Gael senator Neale Richmond has had nothing but nice words to say about Rangers’ new PR chief.

“David and I’s politics would be very different but he is an utter professional who I was able to work closely with at a testing time,” said Richmond [the National].

“We bonded over a mutual love of sport and I’ve no doubt his excellent communications skills will be a huge asset to a club he’s a passionate fan of.”

It a glowing recommendation from a politician who by-and-large sits on the opposite side of the fence politically from Graham.

The commendation comes after Richmond, who is a close ally of Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, and Graham got to know each other during a tumultuous spell in Northern Ireland.

Both worked together during a period of friction between nationalist and unionist communities in the wake of Stormont’s suspension and fears over Brexit.

Richmond is not the only person close to Graham who has praised the diehard bluenose on securing what will be a dream role.

Gerry Carlile – a leading football agent and high-profile Celtic fan – also praised the appointment.

Here’s how Rangers fans reacted to the news that David Graham was to be appointed by the Ibrox club.
