HSV in Bundesliga heartbreak as Rangers anthem blares over tannoy

Rangers partners Hamburger SV have tasted Bundesliga heartbreak as they miss out on promotion against Hertha Berlin.

The German outfit have close links to the Ibrox club stretching back to the 1970s and Ibrox supporters would’ve had a keen eye on the Volkparkstadion club’s chances.

But unfortunately HSV have seen a 1-0 lead overturned by Felix Magath’s side as they fight off relegation from the Bundesliga in the competition’s play-off.

HSV had finished strongly at the end of the season in Bundesliga 2 to earn a shot at the top flight by finishing 3rd, the Bundesliga a division they were relegated from for the first time in 2018.

But now the club face a fifth season toiling in Germany’s second division after Hertha Berlin managed to record a 2-0 victory on the night.

This came after Hamburger SV had gone to Hertha Berlin and recorded a 1-0 victory during the week courtesy of a solitary goal from Ludovit Reis.

But in the return at the 57,000 seater Volkparkstadion the crowd was silenced within minutes as ex-Celtic centre-back Dedryck Boyata levelled the tie in the 4th minute.

Marvin Plattenhardt then scored the all-important second goal in the match to put Hertha Berlin 2-1 up, with Hertha star Lucas Tousart being sent off in the 6th minute of injury time at the end of the game.

HSV suffer Bundesliga heartbreak as Rangers anthem plays over tannoy

It’s yet more heartbreak for Hamburger SV and fans will hope next season, their fifth in the lower tier, will finally be their last.

Traditionally one of the biggest clubs in Germany Rangers fans will hope they can overcome the challenges of the last few seasons and reach the Bundesliga ahead of season 23/24.

Especially amid claims that Hamburger SV played Rangers anthem Every Saturday We Follow in the stands at halftime in the clash.

Given the trials and tribulations both sides have faced there’s a symmetry to the lyrics and it certainly wouldn’t be the first time HSV fans have belted out Rangers songs.

Let’s hope next year is finally their year.

Meanwhile, Rangers have been linked with a cut-price move for a player first linked to Ibrox in January.
