'He's no Joe Aribo': These Rangers fans react as Aston Villa sign Coutinho

Aston Villa confirmed the signing of FC Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho on loan earlier today – and Rangers fans on Twitter think Steven Gerrard has landed a “pound shop Joe Aribo” in his former Liverpool teammate.

Gerrard has been strongly linked with a number of Rangers players since heading down the M6 to join Villa in November but so far there’s yet to be any solid offer for any of the champions’ players.

However, the Premier League side has secured the short-term signing of the Brazil international as Barcelona’s firesale continues.

Coutinho has struggled in Spain since leaving Liverpool, spending time out on loan with Bayern Munich previously, and his arrival at Villa Park is probably a bit of a step down from Barca and Bayern.

For Gerrard, Rangers fans think the former Gers boss has also had to take a step down in the quality of target he’s gone for this month, opting for the Brazil star over Joe Aribo.

While the Gers fans obviously had their tongue’s planted firmly in their cheek, the signing of Coutinho should hopefully kill off any lingering rumours over a move for Aribo by Gerrard.

His involvement at AFCON may have thrown a spanner in the works and only delayed a move until the summer but Rangers fans are happy that the Nigerian star will see out the season as a Rangers player.

One fan even joked he felt sorry for Gerrard having to downgrade from trying to sign Aribo, such is the high regard the Ibrox star is held in by fans.

The arrival of Sands could be the catalyst for more players to join the club, as interest heats up in a defender plying his trade in the Eredivisie.
