Has former Rangers centre-half Fabio Cardoso done the club a favour?

Former Rangers defender Fabio Cardoso might not be remembered all that fondly at Ibrox, but he could’ve indirectly done his old side a favour back home in Portugal.

Cardoso is coming under for crocking Porto wonderkid Romario Baro as Cardoso’s current side Santa Clara fell to a 1-0 defeat to the Portuguese giants.

Porto claim the challenge on the 19-year-old, which lead to a suspected fractured ankle on the youngster, was out of order.

“The tackle by Fabio Cardoso was very serious,” explains Porto’s Director of Communication, Francisco Marqueson [Scottish Sun].

“It was typical of the extreme aggressiveness displayed by Santa Clara throughout the game and they were fortunate they were aided by the benevolence of the referee.”

It’s strong words for Porto who are understandably upset their young talent has been crocked at such a crucial stage of the season.

Whilst it’s never nice to hear about someone being out injured, it may well boost Rangers chances of getting a result against the Portuguese side at the end of October.

Baro might only be 19 but he has been involved in six games so far this season. He’s highly rated in Portugal and there’s little doubt they’ve lost an option without him in the team.

But the Portuguese side carries plenty of threats and Rangers will do well to get a result against them in Europe this season.

Porto aren’t the only ones who’ve been outspoken in the wake of the challenge.
