When Greg Docherty signed for Rangers, it almost seemed to happen overnight.
That gives the impression that the physical, athletic midfielder was on our radar for a while. The fact we spent £650,000 on him also suggests there’s something about him. He’s proving that on-loan at Shrewsbury Town.
Docherty scores and lays on three in superb display
Last night in a 6-0 demolition of Tranmere Rovers, Docherty was superb.
The midfielder scored a goal and laid on three for his teammates in a superb midfield and team performance. He was only outshined by a second half hattrick for Fejiri Okenabirhie.
It’s not the first great performance by the youngster in Shrewsbury shirt. He’s got three goals in ten from midfield.
He really seems to be growing into the loan move and getting a confidence he hasn’t quite found at Ibrox yet. He shows a maturity well beyond his 22 years too – he asked for the loan himself in order to get game time.
Does Docherty have a role to play?
Docherty struggled with confidence and was maybe just trying to hard after earning his dream move. It was a challenging time for him and the club. He joined in January and the club was going through a transitional period.
Now, with some breathing space, it seems to be doing him the world of good. It’s very unlikely he’ll be involved next season.
Could Gerrard recall him this year? That all depends on whether he needs him or Gerrard feels he is ready.
But he could Greg Docherty could be like a new signing.
