Giovanni van Bronckhorst drops major Rangers player Ajax starting hint

Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst has hinted that he will stick with under fire goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin for the club’s Champions League trip to Ajax in Amsterdam.

The Scotland international goalie, 33, has come under heavy fire from Rangers after an abject goalkeeping display failed to prevent Celtic scoring four goals without reply at the weekend.

Ex-Hearts and Sunderland stopper McLaughlin was at fault for every goal – especially the fourth – and it’s led to major debate around whether he is good enough to be the Rangers number one.

But Dutch coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst – who cut a more defiant figure than usual in the post-match press conference for this clash – insisted big changes were not needed in the club’s personnel.

Asked directly about the situation involving Jon McLaughlin, the manager hinted that he will stick to his guns despite the noise surrounding the keeper and the fact Rangers have the likes of Allan McGregor and Robby McCrorie in reserve.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst gives Rangers backing to Jon McLaughlin

“I’ve spoke with Jon and I’ve spoken with the team about how we played, the way we conceded goals and how we need to improve, what went wrong,” said van Bronckhorst [Rangers].

“It’s a normal process. You cannot change every time you gave a defeat. You cannot change everything because you have to stick to your beliefs and your way of playing.

“The execution we had on Saturday was below par – far below par. That’s what I want to see different.

“It’s the only reaction we have to show. Of course after a defeat you are very down. But it’s normal as a human being when you lose a game.

“But then again you have to look forward. You learn from the mistakes you have.

“As a player and a manager you want to go on the pitch the next day and be a better player for the next game. That’s the intention we have.”

Jon McLaughlin has taken the number one shirt from Allan McGregor this season and there was barely a Rangers fan out there not calling for this decision come the end of the campaign.

Club legend McGregor, 40, was handed a new deal come the end of the last season but has only featured once for the side this campaign – in the League Cup win over Queen of the South.

But now the pressure is on both Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Jon McLaughlin with the goalkeeper’s performances to come under increasing scrutiny in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, one Rangers star indirectly finds himself at the centre of an Ibrox leak story.
