Steven Gerrard has said there will be no problem with Jermain Defoe playing up front alongside Alfredo Morelos after the English striker signed an 18-month-loan deal at Ibrox.
Morelos is Rangers number one striker and Gerrard has preferred playing with a lone man up top this season.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, Gerrard finally broke his silence on the transfer. The Rangers Boss was very positive about the move. In fact, he seemed delighted to have got it over the line.
The Liverpool legend said that he knows “more than most” what Defoe is all about. And that includes how he can use him. If that’s alongside Morelos then it’s alongside Morelos.
When asked if Morelos and Defoe can play up front together, Gerrard said:
“Yes, 100 per cent,” added Gerrard. “So can Defoe and Lafferty, so can Lafferty and Morelos. It will just depend on the game and the opposition, who’s in form and who deserves to keep the shirt.
“I think one thing that’s been obvious in the first six months is that we’ve been heavily reliant on Alfredo, certainly early on in the European run. Lafferty came in and helped but it’s not enough to have two strikers.”
Rangers have predominantly used a 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 all season. This has had Morelos as the leading man and focal point of the side. In games where we’ve played with two up front and three at the back, we’ve struggled.
We may yet see some tactical changes to Rangers on the pitch as the team adapt to their new signing.
But if Gerrard can get Morelos and Defoe firing together, Rangers will be a formidable force in Scotland.
That’s if Rangers can keep hold of their top goalscorer.
