Gerrard comments on Andy King signing good news for Greg Docherty

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard welcomed Andy King to Ibrox last night as the Welsh international was unveiled as the Gers tenth summer signing – and his comments appear to confirm the Ibrox future of Greg Docherty.
Docherty’s appearances have been infrequent since his return from Shrewsbury Town on loan and the arrival of King made it look as though the midfielder would possibly have to head back out on loan.

However, Gerrard revealed he now has six options to choose from in central midfield – with Docherty appearing to be one of those.

“I think he can do numerous jobs in the middle of the pitch. He can play as a Steven Davis for example and control a game with his passing. I think he can go box-to-box and he can play either side of a holder, left or right,” Gerrard told Rangers TV.
“I’ve said throughout pre-season I am looking for two strong options in every position. I’ve got six now in that midfield area and I am delighted because he is hungry to play.”
Docherty came off the bench in last night’s 3-1 win over FC Midtjylland and it wouldn’t be a big surprise to see him handed a starting place against East Fife in the League Cup this weekend.

His impressive season at Shrewsbury has fans hoping he can replicate that form at Ibrox and force his way into the starting XI.
With the likes of Steven Davis, Joe Aribo, Ryan Jack, Glen Kamara and King all competing for places, Docherty will need to step up another level if he is going to find a way into the side.
