Gerrard blasts 'disrespect' of the Old Firm by media

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has hit out at “disrespect” of the Gers and bitter rivals over questions asking “how far” players can go in their career.

The Gers boss insists that some players are more than happy to see out their career playing for either half of the Old Firm giants – calling Rangers  a “top club in Europe.”

Gerrard pointed to Alfredo Morelos as one he is asked the question about and rejected the idea that every player just wants to use the Old Firm as a stepping stone.

“Sometimes people disrespect the size of the Old Firm clubs. I get asked that question a lot about players, even Alfredo Morelos – how far can they go?” Gerrard said, as quoted by the Daily Record.

“Rangers are a top club in Europe, playing in European competition. We get 50,000 supporters through the door.

“Sometimes players are content to see out their career here and understand and respect the size of the club they’re representing.”

There are few clubs anywhere in the world that have the sort of true global support that the Old Firm have.

While English Premier League sides may have new-found hordes of fans in Asia and the Middle-East thanks to TV, Rangers and Celtic are supported in all the same places without having a billion-pound marketing machine behind them.

There will be some players who will look to use Rangers or Celtic as a stepping stone to the riches down south but there are just as many who see playing at Ibrox every other Saturday as the pinnacle of their career.
