Gerrard admits that two young Gers are 'close' to a first-team chance

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has hinted that Academy stars like Dapo Mebude and Josh McPake could get a chance to appear for the first-team – after the pair were part of the matchday squad for today’s win over Aberdeen.
Neither Mebude or McPake made the final 18 but were part of the warm-ups and part of the pool after the Scottish FA Youth Cup win over Celtic in midweek.

Gerrard admitted that the pair are close to making the 18 and insisted that he won’t be “reluctant” to throw a young player in if the opportunity arises.
“They’re close, they’ve given me something to think about,” Gerrard told RangersTV.

“They’re on my mind and so are one or two others in the Academy. I believe in the Academy and if there’s an opportunity then the boys need to be on their toes because I won’t be reluctant to someone in there.”
The Rangers Academy sides have had great success so far this season with the reserves on the brink of winning the league while the under-18s could complete the double with a league win of their own.

There’s been a big shift in the youth set-up at Ibrox in recent years and Craig Mulholland and his staff deserve huge credit for the improvements made,
Hopefully, there are a host of young players who follow current poster boy Ross McCrorie from the youth sides to the first-team.
