In summer of 2017, Rangers were heavily linked with a move for Louis Moult.

The striker had attracted admirers through strong performances at Motherwell, but the deal never materialised and Moult stayed at Fir Park until January.

Preston North End secured his signature for around £450,000, but rumours continued to circle about a return to Rangers, as the forward initially struggled for game time.

However, the Englishman is starting to come good at Preston, and it looks like the Gers may have missed a trick.

Afforded more game time of late, he has begun to adjust to the demands of life in the Championship.

Moult has experienced a change in fortunes

This afternoon, he netted the only goal of the game to secure a huge three points for North End at Nottingham Forest.

The men from Deepdale entered the game as underdogs. However, a first half red card for Muhammed Besic, turned the odds in the visitor’s favour.

Like any good poacher, Moult was in the right place at the right time, to steer home a chance from close range on 56 minutes. It proved to be the winner, handing the Lilywhites their sixth league victory of the season.

At 26, this striker may be entering the prime of his career. While not yet prolific at Championship level, Moult is a goal scorer who may have been able to work wonders at Ibrox.

The £450,000 that Preston paid for him last January will begin to look a steal, if his strikes continue to prove decisive in Championship fixtures.

Rangers may have missed their best opportunity to land this front man, and in hindsight, that looks regrettable.
