Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has given some insight into the reasons behind Dutch defender Danilho Doekhi apparently ‘snubbing’ a move to Rangers – and it doesn’t sound as though there was any offer from Ibrox.
According to Romano, Doekhi chose the move to Bundesliga side Union Berlin because of their ‘Europa League chance’ and it seems odd that the player would choose to turn down a move to the current finalists.
Romano tweeted: “Dutch centre back Danilho Doekhi will join Union Berlin as free agent, deal signed and completed. Contract until June 2025.
“The Vitesse captain had several options but chose for Bundesliga club because of Europa League chance. Club announcement to follow soon.”
Rangers have long been linked with a move for the Vitesse star as Gio van Bronckhorst prepares for a busy summer in the transfer market.
Rangers’ interest in Doekhi doesn’t seem to have been serious if Fabrizio Romano is right
While much has been made of Doekhi’s apparent Rangers snub, it doesn’t really seem like Rangers were that keen on bringing him to Ibrox – rightly or wrongly.
With John Souttar already Ibrox-bound, the Light Blues’ hierarchy may have alternative targets in mind this summer with Connor Goldson and Leon Balogun both out of contract.
However, Doekhi has made his decision now and time will tell if it is one he lives to regret.
