Confusion over Rangers star's fitness as 'sweaty three days' await

Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos has been pictured on crutches ahead of this weekend’s Old Firm clash with Celtic – and with suggestions the striker was on his way out of Glasgow today, Kemar Roofe must start if the Colombian is unavailable.

After pictures emerged on social media of El Bufalo on crutches, suspicions were raised when he appeared to be in the departure lounge rather than arrivals at Glasgow Airport.

One Twitter user would claim the Rangers talisman was headed onto the flight he’d just disembarked in Glasgow, fuelling speculation he could be off to London to see a specialist.

If – and it is still a big if just now – Morelos is out on Sunday, Gio van Bronckhorst has to turn to Kemar Roofe ahead of Fashion Sakala.

While we should find out more about Morelos’ injury tomorrow, there can only be one pick to replace him for what is now the biggest game of Rangers’ season.

The Jamaica international has looked sharp in his recent appearances and, although he doesn’t seem to be thought of as a genuine challenger to Morelos’ berth, he offers far more as a number 9 than Sakala

Roofe’s ability to create something out of nothing and lead the line will offer Rangers more in a must-win game – and there aren’t many games that are as must-win as this one.

Seven league goals from 19 games this season is a solid return from the striker and one on Sunday may well prove to be crucial in the title race.

With van Bronckhorst due to speak to the media tomorrow, there will be an update on Morelos’ fitness coming soon.

Going into a second successive Old Firm without the Gers’ talisman will be a huge blow, but Roofe has more than enough quality to replace him, if needed, on Sunday.
