Barisic injury a big Rangers concern despite stunning Braga win

Rangers fans will be sweating over the condition of Borna Barisic after the defender was forced off in the second half of Thursday night’s triumph over Braga with a back injury.

The full-back had only just recovered from a knock ahead of the Europa League tie, having missed the Gers’ last two league matches against Kilmarnock and Livingston.

It was a massive boost to see him return, even if he did look a little rusty following his stint on the sidelines.

Yet, he wouldn’t manage to last the full game, due to a fresh injury sustained when he was clattered by an opposition player in the second half.

Barisic spent some time on the Ibrox turf receiving treatment from medical staff and it became clear that he would be unable to continue. In the 73rd minute, he was substituted for Greg Stewart and headed straight down the tunnel, presumably for further treatment.

After the game, Steven Gerrard wasn’t able to provide much additional information.

“He’s had a knock on his back, I’m not sure yet [about the severity of the problem], we’ll have to assess it,” he said, as captured by RangersTV.

Given that the Gers are back in action on Sunday against St Johnstone before travelling to Portugal for the second leg against Braga next week, Barisic’s latest knock will be a cause for concern.

Andy Halliday deputised during the Croatian’s recent domestic absence, while Joe Aribo filled in superbly for the final 20 minutes on Thursday night.

However, neither are natural full-backs and Barisic has such a major influence on the side both defensively and in attack, contributing 14 assists this season.

Alfredo Morelos is already set to miss the second leg through suspension and being without Barisic would constitute a second major blow, with everything still to play for.

UPDATE: Gary McAllister has since ruled Barisic out of the weekend trip to St Johnstone and says the player’s condition will be monitored over the coming days [Rangers FC Twitter].
