Ally McCoist dreaming of Rangers v Barcelona in Europa League draw

Rangers icon Ally McCoist wants to face Catalan giants FC Barcelona in the Europa League playoff round after Barca dropped out of the Champions League.

Xavi’s side are one of eight potential opponents for the Light Blues in Monday’s draw and Super thinks it would be a “fantastic” tie for the Ibrox support after making it to the knockout rounds for the third year in a row.

While the likes of Sevilla, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig are also possible opponents for Rangers, McCoist has his sights set on a glamour clash with Barcelona and a trip to the Nou Camp.

“I would take Barcelona,” McCoist said after last night’s 1-1 draw with Lyon.

“What a tie for Rangers, what a tie for the supporters. It would be fantastic.

“Rangers did not deserve to lose that game. It has been fantastic and a real bonus to have qualified before the game tonight. It is important.

“You want to go through and maintain that unbeaten run for Giovanni.”

The playoff round won’t take place until February, giving van Bronckhorst some time to strengthen his squad ahead of a clash with one of the Champions League dropouts.

If McCoist gets his wish, it’ll see Gio on a collision course with one of his former clubs, having spent three years playing for Barca between 2007 and 2010.

While Barcelona would represent a huge challenge, Rangers would at least have a puncher’s chance of grabbing a shock result and making it through to the last 16 of the Europa League.

The draw for the playoff round of the Europa League takes place on Monday afternoon in Nyon and all the information you need about the draw can be found here.

The draw against Lyon last night was important in regard to finances, but just how much did Rangers earn from the six group fixtures they played?
