Reported £23m looks like Rangers dosh well spent amid Liverpool showing

Former Rangers star Calvin Bassey once again grabbed the attention but the defender was powerless to resist Liverpool beating new club Ajax at Anfield.

Rangers’ Group A rivals were facing off in a Champions League clash on Merseyside with Jurgen Klopp’s heroes winning 2-1 ahead of the Ibrox side’s clash with Napoli.

Liverpool had taken the lead in the match through Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah before Ghanaian striker Mohammed Kudus – someone very familiar to Rangers – levelled the scoring for the Dutch Champions.

Ajax also very nearly held out for a draw in Liverpool but were eventually undone by a late Joel Matip header, with Jurgen Klopp relieved to pick up all three points come full time.

At present, it means Rangers are the only team in Group A without a win and the Gers really need something from the Napoli game to keep their hopes of qualification for European football beyond Christmas alive.

Rangers are set to host Napoli at Ibrox before a hotly anticipated double-header against Liverpool, with the first game set to take place at Anfield.

Ex-Rangers star Calvin Bassey impresses for Ajax v Liverpool

With Rangers’ match with Napoli shunted forward 24 hours, Calvin Bassey was once again impressing on the big stage as he put in a tenacious and composed defensive performance for Ajax against Liverpool.

The defender has been praised for his “controlled aggression” with Calvin Bassey developing into an excellent one-on-one defender and catching the eye every time he pulls on the Ajax shirt.

Still only 22, the £23m looks to be money well spent by Ajax and Rangers fans do take a sense of pride in seeing Calvin Bassey fulfil his potential, albeit elsewhere. Once a Ranger, always a Ranger.

Meanwhile, one Ibrox star is set to come into the Rangers team against Napoli after yet another injury to an Ibrox first-teamer.
