Rangers star Calvin Bassey has named the Real Madrid defender he looks to base his game on after growing up idolising Cristiano Ronaldo and Leo Messi growing up.
While he started out in a more advanced role as a kid, Bassey’s gradual shift towards a defensive role saw him look towards David Alaba as an inspiration.

“It changed over the years as my position changed,” Bassey said [YouTube].
“I started off as a winger so probably Ronaldo and Messi but now it’s a changed a bit to David Alaba.
“He plays a similar position to me, left-back and centre-half, and he’s a top-quality player.”
The Nigerian international also made clear he wants to test himself against the very best – both for club and country – as he opened up on his future ambitions, adding: “My dream, obviously, is to win trophies.
“I want to be part of a winning team and test myself against some of the best players in the world domestically and at international level.”
Bassey winning more trophies at Rangers would be perfect for everyone
The Nigerian international has had a stunning few months at Ibrox and it is no surprise there are a number of clubs reportedly keen on signing him.
With two years left on his Rangers deal, securing Bassey long-term before winning more trophies here would be ideal.
A league winner’s medal and Scottish Cup medal are already tucked away safely by Bassey but there is room for him to add a lot more.
