The Ibrox side have been starved of seat at European’s elite table for over a decade and had to overcome opposition from the Netherlands to reach this stage of the competition.
That night in Eindhoven will live long in the memory for Rangers fans as the club dumped PSV to earn a date with their Amsterdam rivals Ajax, Serie A giants Napoli and last season’s beaten finalists Liverpool.
First up is a trip to the Netherlands and Rangers are set to face an Ajax side in fine form following a transformational summer at the Dutch club.
Ten players have joined – including Calvin Bassey from Rangers – and as many as 15 have left as the new look Alfred Schreuder era gets underway at the Johan Cruyff Arena [Transfermarkt].
Here’s how we predict Rangers could line up on the night as they look to bounce back from the weekend’s Celtic disappointment and continue their fine form in European competition.
Rangers predicted XI for Champions League clash v Ajax
Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst has already suggested that Jon McLaughlin will continue between the sticks, whilst James Tavernier and Connor Goldson are defensive stalwarts.
Despite the fact Ben Davies travelled with the squad, the Englishman is a doubt to start this fixture so we’re backing James Sands to once again partner Connor with Borna Barisic continuing at left-back.
In midfield, a combination of John Lundstram and Glen Kamara marshalled the middle of the pitch in Eindhoven so we expect them to get the nod here.
In front of them, we’re going to go with Malik Tillman whilst we’re tipping Ryan Kent, Antonio Colak and Scott Wright to form the front three and complete the XI.
