Rangers star Connor Goldson has had a difficult season at Ibrox so far and as the situation surrounding the player’s contract reaches a crescendo, the pressure is unlikely to cool.
The Ibrox vice-captain is a vital part of how the Ibrox club play but along with plenty of his teammates, looks a fraction of the player who helped guide the side to 55 last season.
As he prepares to enter the final six months of contract Rangers’ recent stumbling performances have not helped the chatter surrounding the defender.
After the 2-2 draw with Aberdeen, frustrated Rangers fans have began to lose some patience with a side who blew away records in the last campaign but haven’t been able to string together an ultimately competent 90 minutes yet this season.
The centre-back was woefully at fault for the Aberdeen opener, Goldson’s ball putting John Lundstram under pressure from our own goal kick and the Dons’ press leading to the opener.
Rangers fans fear contract situation is hampering Connor Goldson
Despite his best efforts to restore parity – Goldson was a threat from corners and forced a fine save from Joe Lewis at 2-1 in the first half – the player’s over-eager performances and lack of composure at present was summed up by a driven through ball that went to, well, no-one, with the team struggling in in the second half.
Beyond that, the player was a stickler for poor fouls and as the entire Rangers team struggled to find their rhythm, his role as a team leader became more and more scrutinised.
This has continued into the post-match inquest and there is a growing vein of thought amongst some Gers fans that the player looks uninterested at worst and pre-occupied at best.
To them, Goldson’s unsettling contract situation is an easy explanation for the player’s downturn in the commanding form which made him amongst the club’s top performers last season.
Goldson has explained that the situation involving his contract isn’t just his decision to make as he nods to his young family and what is best for the future.
But as the situation reaches a climax, whatever happens next must be sorted as soon as possible otherwise fans will soon be asking if its actually worth tying this Connor Goldson down on a new deal.
Connor Goldson isn’t the only one feeling the brunt of fan frustrations as another key player – on-form before the Aberdeen clash – is criticised for a disappointing performance.
