Shades of iconic Gerrard Rangers move with £50m-rated Aston Villa man

Former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard transformed the career of James Tavernier by naming him Ibrox captain, and could he be about to do the same with John McGinn at Aston Villa?

The former Liverpool and England skipper, widely regarded as one of the greatest captains of his generation, has just named the Scotland international as the new Villa Park leader.

Similarly when Gerrard came into Rangers in 2018, the Anfield legend and his backroom staff earmarked James Tavernier as the man to lead the squad to that famous 55th title.

And despite there being more than a few bumps in the road, it was a decision that will echo through Rangers history as James Tavernier became an Ibrox legend and grew into the role by the season.

Not only will that image of Tav carrying the trophy be etched into the Rangers tapestry, but the decision to anoint the right-back with the title transformed not just the squad but Tavernier himself.

James Tavernier is now a bonafide Rangers legend and amid reports a new contract beckons, don’t bet against the skipper playing out his career at Ibrox.

But if Stevie G hadn’t adorned Tavernier’s arm with that captain’s band four years ago things might’ve been very different for both Rangers and the club’s captain fantastic.

Shades of James Tavernier at Rangers as John McGinn made Villa captain

It was a major move and one that eventually paid huge dividends and Aston Villa fans will be viewing the John McGinn decision with interest.

The move to make Tavernier Rangers captain was a surprise one at the time and, similarly to this decision with McGinn, it saw the incumbent stripped of the role.

Lee Wallace was Rangers captain through the lower divisions and the move to strip the left-back of the captaincy was a bold one given the ex-Scotland international would be with the club for another season.

Similarly, England international Tyrone Mings remains a part of the Aston Villa squad but will now be answerable to John McGinn next season, even if the defender has shown humility after the decision.

Both James Tavernier and John McGinn are known to be popular characters in their respective dressing rooms but the decision to make them captain puts an added responsibility onto their roles at Rangers and Aston Villa respectively.

With James Tavernier, the Ibrox captain relished the opportunity and has developed into one of the finest attacking right-backs in European football.

Steven Gerrard and Aston Villa will be hoping to decision to appoint John McGinn captain heralds similar results from midfield at Villa Park.

Once the subject of £50m links to Manchester United, if McGinn can respond to this decision at Villa like Tavernier did at Rangers then it won’t be the end of these kind of reports.

Meanwhile, one new Rangers star has been learning all about the club from an old master who has been pictured laying down the Ibrox law.
