Reported £33m ex-Rangers pair suffer different new club fortunes

Former Rangers pair Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey have had differing pre-season experiences for Southampton and Ajax respectively.

The Nigerian international pair left the Ibrox side this summer with the two players set to rake in a combined £33m for Rangers in a bumper double deal.

But as things start to go to plan for Joe Aribo, Calvin Bassey had a debut to forget for his newly adopted Ajax side.

Aribo had impressed for Southampton earlier in the week and had begun to get noticed following his £6m rising to £10m move to the South coast [Daily Mail].

After grabbing the attention of Saints midfielder Stewart Armstrong earlier in the week, the midfielder was back amongst the headlines again this weekend.

Joe Aribo showed that wonderful technique and close control that became synonymous with his time at Rangers to glide up the park and finish with aplomb.

In a wonderful solo effort, Aribo carries the ball from his own half and works it through the Villarreal defence to equalise in an eventual 2-1 defeat to the La Liga side.

Ex-Rangers teammate Calvin Bassey didn’t fare quite so well as he made his debut for Dutch club Ajax in the Johan Cruyff shield against PSV.

The Nigerian international defender was shown a red card after coming off the bench for Ajax in a debut to forget as the Amsterdam club fell to a 5-3 defeat.

Bassey, 22, was sent packing for a crunching late challenge on PSV attacking midfielder Ismael Saibari only 13 minutes into his debut for the Dutch side.

With Ajax already 4-3 down, the red card added insult to injury with once Rangers-linked Xavi Simons rounding off the scoring in injury time.

It’s not exactly how Calvin Bassey – who could cost Ajax up to £23m – would’ve envisaged his debut going after signing for the Dutch club.

Meanwhile, one crocked Rangers star was spotted amongst the bears this weekend as the Ibrox side got their league campaign underway.
