Rangers club partners HSV have missed out in a place in the DFB Pokal Final after they were defeated in the semis by Bundesliga side Freiburg.
The German second-tier club had done very well to reach this stage of the competition but they found themselves 3-0 down by half-time at the Volkparkstadion.
Goals from Nils Peterson, Nicolas Hofler and Vincenzo Grifo has Freiburg out of sight by the 35th minute with the three-goal deficit proving too hard to overturn for HSV.
But they didn’t go out with a whimper in the DFB Pokal semis as HSV scored a late consolation, Robert Glatzel scoring with only a few minutes to play with the game ending 3-1.
The result means HSV’s season is threatening to burn out with the club sixth in the Bundesliga 2 and needing to close a five-point gap to 3rd to make the Bundesliga playoff with six games remaining.
HSV miss out on potential DFB Pokal Final v Rangers Euro rivals
Interestingly, had HSV managed to defeat Freiburg in the semi-final they may well have been facing off against Rangers’ European rivals RB Leipzig in the DFB Pokal Final.
RB Leipzig face off against Union Berlin in the other semi-final this evening with the winner meeting Freiburg for a chance to lift the trophy.
The German outfit are also in the Europa League semi-finals against Rangers with the Gers set to travel to Germany next week for the first leg.
Ahead of the match, the authorities in Scotland have moved the club’s fixture with Motherwell back 24 hours to give the Ibrox side another day to prepare for the game.
It promises to be an extra-special clash with the Bundesliga’s form team and Rangers will need to be at their best in order to progress to the competition’s final in Seville.
But for HSV they won’t be going to a final of their own in the DFB Pokal as they try to pick themselves up from a disappointing defeat against Freiburg.
Meanwhile, an ex-Rangers star who has made no bones about his desire to one day return has been linked with a team of Premiership rivals.
