Pressure mounts on former Rangers figure as ex-Ger starts to get it right

The Aston Villa pressure is continuing to mount on ex-Rangers boss Steven Gerrard as another former Ibrox figure in Mikel Arteta has Arsenal fans dreaming.

Despite reaching the Europa League Final, Giovanni van Bronckhorst would oversee a monumental 12-point swing in the Scottish Premiership and the entire thing still rankles with plenty.

We’ve spoken previously about the morose gloating of some as Steven Gerrard tries to work things out in Birmingham but the Liverpool legend is beginning to test the patience of the Villa Park faithful.

Despite spending the bones of £50m this summer, Villa have endured a difficult start to a competitive Premier League season with the latest defeat to Crystal Palace at the weekend seeing plenty sharpen their knives.

Gerrard’s side took the lead at Selhurst Park but an eventful match eventually finished 3-1.

The result means Gerrard has lost two of his opening three matches in the Premier League this season with Villa currently sitting in 13th.

But the Premier League is a remarkably competitive division, particularly this season, and plenty of Villa fans are raising doubts whilst Gerrard’s detractors have wasted no time in pointing out the Anfield legend’s low win rate.

All the Gary Neville stuff is a bit ridiculous given that Valencia are traditionally one of La Liga’s top clubs and Aston Villa are undoubtedly a middling Premier League side with yo-yo potential, but we get the point; plenty are applying the pressure on the ex-Rangers boss.

Steven Gerrard pressure builds as another ex-Rangers figure has team flying

It’ll be interesting to see how things progress for the former Rangers boss but Steven Gerrard isn’t the only ex-Ibrox man at the reins of a Premier League club.

Mikel Arteta is now in his third full season as Gunners boss and things finally look like they’re starting to click at the Emirates.

The weekend’s impressive 3-0 win over Bournemouth means the North Londoners have won their first three English top flight games for the first time since 2004.

After a strong summer of recruitment – with Man City pair Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko particularly impressing – Arsenal are now serious dark horses in the title race.

A student of Pep Guardiola, Mikel Arteta will be looking to best the master and whilst his youthful side haven’t gone the distance before, excitement is building.

It just remains to be see if former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard will still be a Premier League manager by the time everything is settled in May.

Meanwhile, links to one high-profile attacking midfielder have been rubbished but there remains hopes regarding another potential target.
