Rangers star Calvin Bassey has put down a marker for his place in the Ibrox side as the left-back impresses in the 5-0 demolition of Dunfermline.

The Ibrox side dismantled the Pars in the Premier Sports Cup as a much-changed side added a verve and impetus which has been missing from the team over the last week.

This victory puts an end to a run of three straight defeats and is a welcome boost to an Ibrox side who were under mounting pressure this week.

The performance of Italian born Bassey, 21, was a particular highlight as the full-back picked up from where he left off after a strong pre-season.

The wing-back was a menace throughout the entire match and helped the Gers get underway as he pounced on a slack Graham Dorrans back pass to cut back to John Lundstram.

Bassey’s contribution wouldn’t end here as the defender carved out a host of opportunities down the left hand side and even set up another goal for Ianis Hagi.

The ex-Leicester City kid’s sparkling performance comes amid a run of difficult form for number one left back and Croatian international Borna Barisic.

Barisic has come in for some criticism from supporters and hasn’t quite looked the player of last season so far this campaign.

Whilst there’s little doubting Borna can get back to his best, the player appears to be suffering from a disrupted summer defined by injury and a frustrating lack of playing time at Euro 2020.

For the time being, it’s refreshing to see Bassey grab his opportunity and a run in the first team must surely be in the pipeline for the player.

Whilst Bassey caught the eye in the 5-0 hammering of the Pars, another Ibrox star also earned the acclaim of supporters as he got his Gers scoring career underway.
