Rangers boss Steven Gerrard kicked up a bit of a stink last week when pressed on the situation surrounding striker Alfredo Morelos.

Cutting a frustrated figure when asked about the Colombian, Gerrard took aim at those he believes are behind all the reported FC Porto interest and – worryingly – admitted that he has no idea when the player was due to return.

Naturally, this spiky interview – conducted by Sky Sports – sent fans and the press haywire with much speculation persisting ever since.

However, this is in stark contrast to comments Gerrard made earlier in the month regarding Morelos’ return.

Gerrard told RangersTV on July 3rd that he expected Morelos to be available for the first game of the season against Livingston.

RONALDO NEEDS TO STOP WHINING.

“We all know how proud Alfredo is to represent Colombia,” said Gerrard.

“He’s on the other side of the world but we still have our eyes on and still making contact and making sure he’ll do the right thing.

“When he finishes in the tournament he’ll have a short break and then come and join us for the rest of pre-season and we’ll try have him ready for game one as well.

“It’s important he does the right things when he stops until he comes back because he’ll have a very short pre-season and we need Alfredo to be fit and firing for the important games coming our way.”

This was the same day Morelos’ Colombia played a quarter-final in the Copa America against Uruguay, a game Los Cafeteros won, guaranteeing another week in Brazil.

Colombia played their final match of the tournament against Peru on the 10th of July, with over two weeks now having passed since the player finished up.

Some 17 days later the Daily Record are now reporting that “it’s unclear” if Morelos is back in the country whilst they admit the player’s wife was pictured at Bogota international airport over the weekend.

That report also highlights the tense nature of Morelos’ situation given the fact Colombia is currently on the red list meaning a 10-day hotel quarantine will be required unless an exemption is given.

The Record also point out that the player’s status for the Scottish Premiership opener with Livingston and at the first leg of Champions League qualification is up in the air.

Even without quarantine, the Ibrox striker hasn’t spent any time in pre-season and has spent the last few weeks back home in Cerete in the South America nation.

Let’s just say we’ll be very intrigued to find out what happens when Morelos reports back to the Rangers Training Centre weeks later than what Gerrard clearly expected.

Rangers fans expressed their frustration with the striker last week as they begin to get pretty annoyed themselves regarding the constant speculation in the press
