Rangers will once again send a team to Northern Ireland this summer to take part in the SuperCupNI with the Light Blues’ under-16s set to face County Armagh, Leeds United and Mexican side Santos Laguna in July.
Rangers have a lengthy history with the competition, formerly known as the Milk Cup, becoming the first-ever winners at under-15s in 1985 when a young John Spencer starred in a win over Craigavon on penalties.
The Gers ran out winners at under-16 in 2019 and will be looking to retain their crown as the tournament returns after a three-year hiatus; the likes of Alex Lowry and Cole McKinnon featuring for Rangers.
Gers sides have also reached the final of the Premier tournament (under-17) on three occasions, with wins over Motherwell and Nottingham Forest in the final in 1984 and 1992 before losing to Cherry Meadow of Dublin in 1993.
The 2022 SuperCupNI will take place from Sunday, July 24 to Friday, July 29, with the traditional parade and opening ceremony at the Coleraine Showgrounds kicking off proceedings on Sunday.
Chairman Victor Leonard said: “Manchester United have been long standing supporters of the competition and we are delighted to once again welcome them to our Junior section and in the Challenge section where they will take on a Northern Ireland U19 side managed by Gerard Lyttle.
“In 2019 we hosted Manchester United for two U21 games and in those two games against Rangers and Ballymena United their side included the likes of Anthony Elanga, Brandon Williams and NI international Ethan Galbraith, all of whom went on and played for the first team after their appearances in Coleraine and Ballymena.
“The side that won the Youth Cup earlier this month was stacked with talent, and I am sure Erik ten Hag will be keeping a close eye on their progress ahead of next season.”
